1. Keeping In Mind Attention Spans - You must bear in mind that people who are going to read your resumes are only halfway down a page before they take a decision whether they want to keep reading, save it for later reading or simply discard it. So all that is marketable about you should figure out in the top third of the resume.

2. Keep It At A Good Length –
 The length of your resume is based on your experience. A lengthy resume and a very short resume both signal trouble for the reader. You must be concise and make your resume fit in three pages.

3. Generalized Summaries are Bad, Technical Summaries are Good –You must ensure that general summaries are used sparingly and in a proper manner for them to be effective. Similarly, technical summaries are of more assistance as the first person reading your resume may be non-technical and only look for keywords. But you must refrain from making a long list of technology you have heard of.

4. Dates Are Important – You must have a clear idea about your employment dates. You must mention months as well as years in your experience. This will help the employer gauge how long you have been out of the industry instead of making a guess.

5. Stress on Accomplishments and Not Merely Job Functions –
 You must provide a brief description of your job positions along with your accomplishments. This will help the recruiters in knowing that your every day work activity and at the same time the effect your activities had on the overall company or department.

6. Qualitative Writing Is Important – Lengthy paragraphs or bullets can be tedious for the reader but short sentences can appear simplistic. Your resume should ideally be a combination of both.

7. Using Action Verbs –
 Try to use verbs like managed, completed, administered, developed in place of “responsible for” or “participated in.” This will emphasize the fact that you were not merely a bystander but a true contributor or a leader on a project.

8. No Rules Regarding Education Placement –
Educational qualifications and certifications need not figure out in the beginning. They may make an impression if they are from a reputable institute but if your work experience matches, your certifications and educational qualifications then putting them at the end would be a good idea. The recruiter is bound to look for it if they find your work experience impressive.

9. People Are Not So Keen In Interests – You should be discreet regarding putting your interests whether at the top or at the bottom. You must not put any activities that could be viewed as overtly political or offensive.

10. Be Prepped With A Versatile Resume Template – You must have more than one version of your resume. For instance, if your background is applicable to manager or individual contributor positions, you may not want to show heavy managerial duties or vice versa. Developing and updating your resume from time to time with minor tweaks will avoid the need for last minute rush or panic.
